Sodium Thiosulphate

Sodium Thiosulfate is a chemical also used as a medication for treating pityriasis versicolor and cyanide poisoning. It is also used in the treatment of extravasations during chemotherapy. It stops alkylation and tissue destruction by offering a substrate for the alkylating agents.This inorganic compound comes has the formula of Na2S2O3.xH2O. This is available in white or colorless pentahydrate with efflorescent (loses water readily) crystalline solid substance that easily dissolves in water. According to the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, it is counted among the most effective as well as safe to use medicines. It is developed on an industrial scale from liquid waste products of sodium sulfide. In addition to this, it can be developed in the laboratory by boiling aqueous sodium hydroxide and sulfur or by heating aqueous sodium sulfite with sulfur.

Applications of Sodium Thiosulfate:

• Acts as a sulfur donor for conversing cyanide to thiocyanate
• Used in the treatment of calciphylaxis in hemodialysis people
• Used to neutralize renal toxicity of cisplatin
• Used to dechlorinate tap water or lower down the chlorine levels
